We Asked Fourplay 5 Questions About Their ‘Silver Album’ Recorded At Sunset Sound
It’s hard to come up with a more evocative sound than a Fourplay song – the flowing funk undertones of drummer Harvey Mason and bassist Nathan East, and the wonderful keyboard work of Bob James support the memorable themes they have created for over 25 years. Their newest guitarist Chuck Loeb is joined by Fourplay alumni and Jazz guitar icons Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour on Silver, the newest album from this seminal group.
Composer, producer and keyboardist Bob James is well known for writing such evocative themes as “Angela”, a song so singular that it can serve as the theme of a sitcom as well as the backing track to the newest Cee Lo song. The Fourplay member/founder sat down with us in this edition of Deezer Five Questions:
A Conversation with fOURPLAY

Mike Ragogna: What? Fourplay’s been around for 25 years? The hell you say!
Bob James: You gotta love it! Here we are, Mike. Humbled by the math, but still thinking of adding some more arithmetic.
Nathan East: Hi Mike! It’s hard to believe 25 years since we started Fourplay but as they say “time flies when you’re having FUN!”
Chuck Loeb: Yes! Amazing…let’s do this!
MR: Cool. Before we get into the material on Silver, what are your thoughts about reaching that milestone?
BJ: Looking down at the roses beats pushing them up.
NE: When you embark on a career-defining journey with a gathering of musical-champions, in an exhilarating atmosphere like the vibrant music industry in 1990, it’s celebrated with the kind of energy that makes a milestone like this more likely.
CL: My situation in the band is unique, in the sense that I am the newest member of the band, and I’m just celebrating my fifth year as a member. This offers me some insight from a different perspective of the 25th anniversary. Back at the inception of the band I was a fan of all of the original members individually, and was just totally knocked out when I heard the collaboration on the original CD Fourplay. And so, I can offer my perspective as both an avid observer, and a member. I think the thing that contributes the most to the longevity of the band is the continual striving for excellence in all the facets of creating contemporary jazz: composition, improvisation, production, performance, and a strong connection with the listening audience. I know that the band hit those marks in the first 20 years, and it is my hope that they’ve continued to be met on the three CDs I have had the pleasure to have been involved with, including Silver.
Harvey Mason: From the outset of Fourplay, we insisted our project would not be a “one off” as we intended to follow the longevity model of the Modern Jazz Quartet, commonly known as the MJQ. The synergy was so very special why not continue making this great music. Twenty-five years is indeed a group milestone achieved by few, I’m proud and happy we’ve reached it. From my perspective it has certainly come quickly.

Record Reflections by A. Scott Galloway
25 years ago, a super group of contemporary jazz giants formed a quartet dubbed Fourplay and began the business of making evocative groove-scapes spiced with a tasty dollop of sensuality via soul-pop vocal stars and sexy covers of touchstones by boudoir masters Marvin Gaye and The Isley Brothers. Since that time, they’ve pretty much ditched the vocals and gone deeper into what I call movies for the ears. Fourplay’s new 10-song CD, Silver (Concord Records) – recorded at Sunset Sound Studio in Hollywood where they cut their self titled debut in 1990 for Warner Bros. – marks the band’s 25th anniversary and is, fittingly, one of its finest most consistent CDs in some time.
Aside from said aural movie wonders, I find the highlights of this album (with all songs referencing silver in some constitution) are the slinky “Horace” (pianist Bob James’ homage to jazz legend Horace Silver, the great pianist and prolific “soul-jazz” composer who passed away in June 2014), the acoustic brushed elegance of drummer Harvey Mason’s “A Silver Lining,” guitarist Chuck Loeb’s “Precious Metal” – the most sensual and romantic of the songs featuring special guest Kirk Whalum – and bassist Nathan East’s “Aniversario,” a tasty slice of funk. Extra special are the returns of Fourplay’s previous guitarists: original member Lee Ritenour (who contributes the rich harmonically layered CD-closer “Windmill,” co-composed with old west coast studio friend “The Mase”) and Rit’s replacement Larry Carlton who joyfully teams with Loeb on the bluesy groove “Silverado” which feels like an Eddie Harris line buffed to signature Fourplay polish.

by Veritas on Sep.09, 2015, under News, Press &Reviews
Silver is the third album to feature the group’s newest member, guitarist Chuck Loeb. Here he joins the all-star lineup of bassist Nathan East, keyboardist Bob James and drummer Harvey Mason. Silver features special guest appearances from guitarists Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour and saxophonist Kirk Whalum.
Following the theme of the occasion, most of the 10 new original compositions comprising Silver play off of the anniversary, bearing titles such as “Sterling,” “Precious Metal” and “A Silver Lining.” Just like its namesake, Silver shines, each track a brilliant example of what has made this formidable ensemble—each of whom also has a highly successful career outside of the band—one of the most respected in the jazz world.

Heads Up releases Fourplay’s ‘Silver’ anniversary offering
by Veritas on Sep.09, 2015, under News, Press &Reviews
On the 25th anniversary of the group’s formation, Fourplay offers their fans 10 great songs from a new album simply titled Silver. This album reveals the group’s ability to remain brilliantly creative after so many years together as they continue to bond and produce their truly distinct and recognizable sound.
The members of Fourplay – bassist Nathan East, keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Chuck Loeb, and drummer Harvey Mason – wrote all of the compositions including a couple of collaborations co-written with two former members of the Fourplay – guitarists Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton. Several special guests add their musical visions to Silver including guitarist Larry Carlton and organist Mitch Forman on “Silverado,” guitarist Lee Ritenour on “Windmill,” tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum on “Precious Metal,” vocalist Chris Wells on “Silver Streak,” keyboardist John Beasley on “Windmill,” and Synth master Tom Keane on “Aniversario.”
The titles of the compositions contain variations on the use of the word silver and you might say the ensemble is on a true “Silver Streak” considering that for the past 25 years their recordings have ranked from “Sterling” to platinum! The set opens with “Quicksilver” which was…CONTINUE READING THE FULL ARTICLE HERE!

Chuck Loeb reflects on Fourplay’s 25th anniversary album, SILVER
by Veritas on Aug.04, 2015, under News, Press &Reviews
In general terms, an anniversary like 25 years, is a good occasion to assess where the band came from, where it’s at now, where it’s going in the future, and all the roads joining those three musical locations.
With this album we took the opportunity to share these in a musically with all the wonderful friends & fans that we have throughout the world. It’s inspiring to know that they’ve been on the same journey along with us.
As the newest member of the band (it’s my fifth year anniversary), I am able to understand why these particularly unique group of musicians have enjoyed such longevity, both from a distance as a fan, and as a member. When a sports team wins a championship, or has enduring success, people always talk of the ‘chemistry’ amongst the players. This is very much the same in music. Nathan, Bob, Harvey, and Lee had an immediate musical DNA, which evolved with Larry, and then with myself. It always amazes me when I bring in a song for the band to try, because as soon as we play it as a group, it takes on that unique ‘Fourplay sound’.
There’s also a shared mutual respect, and a very high level of fun when we get together to make music. This shows in the end result. It is hard for a member of the band to try to objectively assess the impact Fourplay might have on the history of jazz. However, in looking at it from the perspective I had as an early listener & fan, I would say that this group weaves sophistication, subtle complexity, and an impressive wealth of musical experience into a very popular musical format, as a true fusion of four musical perspectives. FOURPLAY CELEBRATES THEIR 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH THEIR MOST WIDE-RANGING AND GRATIFYING RECORDING TO DATE
Silver set for release November 20, 2015
Longevity among jazz groups is a surprisingly rare commodity. With relatively few exceptions, a run of a few years, at most, is standard; for a collective of jazz musicians to stick together for a decade or more is almost unheard of. That puts Fourplay, who celebrates their 25th anniversary this year, in a league of their own. Since 1990, bassist Nathan East, keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Chuck Loeb (who joined five years ago) and drummer Harvey Mason have continued to explore together, their efforts resulting in what All Music Guide called one of “the most intuitive, forward-thinking and focused groups in modern jazz.”
On Silver, set for release November 20, 2015 on Heads Up, a division of Concord Music Group, Fourplay celebrates that unprecedented bond with their most wide-ranging and gratifying recording to date.
